Mz. Icar Collective
Mz. Icar is an anonymous collective primarily comprised of black woman artists. Our name is a reference to the word"racism" spelled backward. We recognize that gender and race are social constructs that reflect the time, place, and context of my work. We mention these aspects to provide context for our point of view.
Through our use of Illustration, Photography, Design, archiving, and collage, we explore themes of play, beauty, and radical liberation. Our art is informed by our personal experiences and fascination with color, texture, and proportion.
Through element arrangements, we create grand gestures in the form of murals, public art, photographs, illustrations, moving images, and installation work that celebrates Women, Global Blackness, and Play.
Our art has been exhibited at numerous galleries and venues, including the Paradigm Gallery, MINT Gallery Atlanta, and Welancora Gallery in Brooklyn. We have also worked on site-specific installation projects for Otherworld Philadelphia, Etsy's HQ, Publicis, and created branded art for Ms. Lauryn Hill's world tour, Essence magazine, Nickelodeon, and Doritos.
In 2020, our Value series was featured in the Photoville Exhibition in Downtown Brooklyn, and we are proud to have been selected as a fellow for Philadelphia's 2021 Fellowship for Black Artists, presented by Mural Arts Philadelphia. Our goal is to continue to create stories that explore autonomy and exemplify radical liberation.
